Understanding TMJ Disorders

TMJ disorders are a group of conditions that affect the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint which connects the jaw to your skull. These disorders can present in many different ways. They may cause jaw pain, popping or clicking sounds when moving your jaw, headaches, neck and ear pain, as well as difficulty chewing. TMJ disorders are caused by a variety of factors. While they can vary from one person to another, common causes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders include:

  • Trauma A jaw injury, such as a whiplash or a blow on the face, can cause TMJ disorder.
  • Bruxism Grinding or clenching teeth, usually due to anxiety or stress, can cause strain on the TMJ.
  • Malocclusion A misalignment in the jaw or teeth can cause extra stress to the TMJ.
  • Arthritis The TMJ can be affected by a variety of forms of arthritis including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid, and osteopathic arthritis.
  • Genetics Some people may be genetically predisposed to TMJ disorders.
  • Connective tissue disease: Conditions such as Ehlers Danlos syndrome and Marfan Syndrome can affect the connective tissue in the body including around the TMJ.
  • Hormonal Factors: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during puberty or pregnancy, can contribute to TMJ disorders.
  • Too much chewing gum can cause TMJ strain.
  • Poor posture Posture issues, particularly in the neck and upper spine, can contribute to TMJ disorders.
  • Stress Emotional strain can cause jaw clenching and teeth grinding. This may worsen TMJ symptoms.

The exact cause of TMJ disorder can vary depending on the individual.
